The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West has announced the shortlist for its Civil Engineering Awards 2016.

This year we have received a record breaking number of entries and are pleased to announce that two Devon projects South Devon Highway and Granite & Gears have been successful in receiving awards this year.

South Devon Highway won two categories, both the Over £1 million New Build category and by a landslide the People’s Choice Award which this year saw over 2000 cast their votes!

Granite and Gears was recognised in the Community Award category with a Highly Commended.

The prestigious awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West. It is a chance for projects andorganisations from across the region to showcase the fantastic work that is taking place.

From small projects, refurbishment work through to large new build schemes, the awards will showcase the breadth of wonderful work civil engineers are completing every year in the South West.

Miranda Housden, ICE South West Regional Director said: “We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of so many local projects at our awards ceremony.

“Collectively, the winning projects are a real showcase of what civil engineering is all about; they include a flood protection scheme, bridge maintenance, new highway, helipad, lighthouse boat landing, cycle route construction, dam, service station and even a marine lake. This is far from an exhaustive list of what civil engineering is all about, but it gives a very good idea of how much it impacts upon everybody’s daily lives.

“I would like to offer my congratulations to all of the winning and highly commended projects; your work is a shining example of civil engineering at its best.”

The A380 South Devon Highway is a dual carriageway link between Penn Inn, Newton Abbot and Torbay Ring Road.  The scheme aims to stimulate economic growth for Torbay and the south Devon region.

Granite & Gears saw the completion of a £7 million investment in cycling, walking and equestrian infrastructure, enhancing, connecting, increasing and strengthening access to traffic free, off road routes on and leading to Dartmoor National Park.

This year ICE South West have also made a film to celebrate all the projects that were shortlisted for the awards, if you would like a copy please let us know.
