The exceptional achievements of staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital have been celebrated at the hospital’s Spring Extraordinary People Awards.

The seasonal awards are a way of celebrating extraordinary staff who do exceptional things and often go above and beyond to provide high quality services. Nominations are made by fellow staff members or patients who want to acknowledge the contribution of an individual or team, and the winners in each category are chosen by a panel of judges from the Trust’s Executive Board.

The spring awards ceremony, which was hosted by Trust Chairman James Brent, recently took place at the Wonford hospital. It was attended by staff, Governors and members of the Board, along with the winners of the awards and those who nominated them.

The awards categories consist of Excellent Care, Exceed, Exemplar, Extra Mile Individual and Extra Mile Team.

The spring winners include:

Nurse Rose Briers, who was nominated by the relative of a patient for the compassionate care she provided
The Breast Care Team for implementing a new process to reduce waiting times for routine mammogram results
Emergency Department Consultant Gavin Lloyd for his work on improving patient care and the compassion, empathy and dignity he shows in his day to day work
Catering Assistant Tomasz Miasek is an incredibly hardworking individual who won an award for always going the extra mile for patients
Consultant Chris McLauchlan was chosen for the support he gives bereaved relatives in the Emergency Department
Emergency Department Research nurses Jennie and Christine won an award for their exceptional dedication to recruiting patients to research trials

James Brent, Chairman of the RD&E, said: “It has been wonderful to hear such inspiring stories through these awards. We received so many uplifting and humbling nominations, and so choosing the winners was a very hard task.

"My congratulations go to all our winners. They are shining examples of our extraordinary workforce who, daily, go further than their job requires.”

The inaugural Extraordinary People Awards were held in spring 2013. The Trust runs three seasonal award ceremonies a year and holds a grand ‘Winner of Winners’ ceremony to celebrate all those who have been successful throughout the year.
