The trophies are gleaming, table plans are finished and the countdown has begun to this year’s Teignbridge Sports Personality Awards.

The awards, which celebrate local athletes, coaches, clubs and volunteers, takes place this Friday 29 November at Langstone Cliff Hotel, Dawlish. The glittering awards ceremony is a highlight in the Teignbridge sporting calendar.

The 2013 awards are sponsored by Newton Abbot Races Ltd, the Mid Devon Advertiser, Palm FM and Stage Engage.

A new category has been introduced to honour a nominee which goes that ‘extra mile’ for their sporting passion. The award is in memory of the hugely popular taek-wondo expert and Newton Abbot Leisure Centre fitness instructor Jonny Black, who died in September.

A recent appeal for information through the local media has helped Teignbridge build up a really detailed picture of the history of the awards. Cllr George Gribble, Teignbridge District Council’s Executive Spokesperson for Communities, Recreation and Leisure, said: “We are really looking forward to this year’s event.

There have been so many outstanding nominees in every area of sport it’s made our job as judges even more difficult than usual. For many years we have recognised the value of sport and recreation and this year’s shortlist really is testament to that.

“This year will also be a chance for us to remember one of our own shining stars the late Jonny Black. He inspired so many and we hope the Sports Personality of the Year award that will be given in his memory will create a long lasting legacy.

"We recently sent out an appeal through the local media for information about the awards in previous years. We had an excellent response." "We had a number of responses with stories about previous nominees and winners and would like to thank Kingsteignton Swimming and Lifesaving Club, Teign Heritage Museum and the individual residents who contacted us to tell us their stories and fill in the blanks.

“I am looking forward to meeting the many different generations of sportspeople, volunteers and coaches who are recognised by our awards."

Newton Abbot Races Ltd has confirmed that it will remain as the headline sponsor for another three years.
